The interesting history of yoga mats

The interesting history of yoga mats

Apr 28,2022

According to a 2016 Yoga Journal report, 36.7 million people in the U.S. practice yoga, up from 20.4 million in 2012. The "yoga market" is now worth $16 billion in the U.S. and $80 billion globally. For most of us, the words yoga and industry don't align. Yoga is a self-evolving personal practice, definitely not a business or industry. However, we cannot deny the data from Yoga Journal. About 60% of the "business" comes from yoga accessories, and one of the main "accessories" is the Wholesale natural rubber yoga mats. How and where did these pads appear? Definitely not used by our ancient sages!

If we look at ancient impressions of saints and moonis practicing yoga, they are depicted as practicing on animal skins. Until the 1970s, people were sitting on a "dari" or chattai doing yoga. However, today all over the world, people practice yoga on rubber yoga mats. Whose idea was it to use these pads? When and how do people switch from using daris to these "professional" yoga mats?

The credit for creating the yoga mat also goes to the genius of legendary master Yogacharya BKS Iyengar. He also practiced on the floor or sat on a blanket like other yoga practitioners at the time. In the 1960s, when he went to Europe, he found that his feet would slip when doing backward bends because their floors were different from the Cudappah stones used on Indian floors.

A question he hadn't thought of! His eyes and mind were eager to find a solution. Then, one day in Germany, he found a green rubber pad under the rug to keep them from slipping. He thought, "Would these pads be used to prevent slipping, so he took the pads off and tried them. And, as he expected, feet didn't slip on this pad! He called these green rubber pads" "Adhesive Pads", students in the UK sourced their first set of pads from a German supplier who made rubber pads. They were then called green pads or sticky pads. The trend of using pads under rugs is fading and companies are closing. But , the use of these rubber mats for yoga revitalized these mats. Later, similar blue mats appeared and they are still made in Germany. Germany is a major manufacturer of yoga mats. Although Iyengar in the UK, Europe and the US Yoga practitioners started using these mats, but students in Mumbai and Pune didn't because they were not available in India and they didn't need them. Their feet didn't slip on the floor they were using! However, Pune The international students who studied at the source started to leave the mats behind, and the originator of the yoga mats kept them in their academies.

Over the past 20 years, many countries have manufactured and exported these mats, namely Germany, the United States and now China. These mats are no longer called sticky mats, but "yoga" mats, and are even sold as branded mats by major sporting goods companies like Nike and Reebok, making yoga mat manufacturer a billion-dollar "industry." Once Guruji BKS Iyengar was asked why he hadn't "patented" a prop he created; not even a cushion. He replied, "Did Rishi munis patent their knowledge?" He believed that if his knowledge was helpful to people, it should be made available to them, and there was no question of patenting the ideas. And, as a result, yoga mats have become commonplace.

Maybe it's time to give official credit to BKS Iyengar for creating this unique yoga accessory on his centenary. What to consider! Come to yoga mat supplier secondpagesport.com to purchase yoga mats!
